Indonesia’s Concrete Statues

We just love these colourful concrete statues. Sure, they may seem slightly kitsch compared to other communities’ monuments, deities and spirits, but they are delightful.

When travelling it’s often the minutiae of things that create powerful memories, for us the concrete statues of Bali and Indonesia are charming. They are often overlooked but once seen cannot be unseen.

Often huge, these hand crafted community statements are scattered throughout towns and villages of Indonesia. They are symbols of community values, culture and myths. Sometimes spiritual, sometimes historic and often just symbols of community and family values, each has its own story to tell.
